The new F-GAS Regulation has been approved by the European Union

This regulation, an essential step towards a fully sustainable refrigeration industry, will affect the entire commercial and industrial refrigeration market.

Key measures include gradually phasing out the consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which will already see a reduction in quotas as of next year, reaching a residual minimum level of 16% of the current value in 2030, and then falling to zero in 2050.

The regulation also states that as of 1 January 2032, the use of fluorinated greenhouse gases with a GWP over 750 for the servicing and maintenance of stationary refrigeration equipment will be prohibited, i.e. it bans almost all currently used fluorinated refrigerants, except for reclaimed or recycled ones.

It is therefore crucial to make one’s purchasing decision now on a long-term basis, using appropriate technologies to address the ecological transition.

The most efficient technologies and products are already available in Italy, and at Criocabin, as producers of these technologies, we are working alongside retailers to assist them in this ecological, technological and social transition.

Natural refrigerants are not the future, they are the present. Our speech at Refrigera with the UCFG

At the conference on the benefits of natural refrigerants in the heating and cooling sector, Criocabin Technical Manager – Mario Penada, addressed this topic and reiterated the key role played by natural refrigerants in our sector, and in the entire ecological transition process.

Below, we report on the speech made in response to the question posed by the journalist Maria Luisa Doldi of Zero Sotto Zero.

It is widely claimed that natural refrigerant technologies are limited in terms of application. They cannot fulfil all demands for application. What is your opinion of this claim, especially in the light of the latest developments in technology?

“The main truth is that not all sectors have evolved at the same speed, because not all of them have invested in research in order to keep up with the times.

Commercial refrigeration embraced sustainability right from the start: the future of our planet depends on our actions, and the exclusive use of natural refrigerants with low or almost zero GWP is certainly the most appropriate choice.

In our sector, we were not afraid to be the first to start using natural refrigerants, nobody said it was impossible or a failure. We invested in R&D to stop using refrigerants containing HFCs and HFOs as quickly as possible.

We believe in technological research to safeguard the future of our planet: for us, using propane (R290) and carbon dioxide (R744) is not the future, but the present. An Eco-Green present.

We can therefore say that we were the pioneers, and I dare to provoke: other sectors should be grateful to companies in the commercial refrigeration sector for having enabled the development of technologies that use natural refrigerants, therefore allowing all sectors to benefit from proven and safe technologies, with the additional benefit of lower investment costs.

Today, using natural refrigerants should be a conscious choice for everyone.

Analysing all that is currently being said regarding the impending F-Gas review, we can say that novelties often cause fear… But nowadays, we need the courage to look back and instead fear the past, and how we polluted our planet with HFCs and HFOs. Now is the time for all Heating and Cooling sectors to use natural refrigerants without any fear..

Agreement reached on the new F-GAS Regulation

On 5 October, the European Council and the EU Parliament reached a provisional political agreement on the revised F-GAS Regulation. The new regulations stipulate completely eliminating HFCs in consumption by 2050 and minimising production in Europe by 2036.

The agreement is intended to further reduce emissions into the atmosphere and limit the global temperature increase, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

As a member of the Unione del Caldo e del Freddo Green (Coalition for Green Heating and Cooling), Criocabin has promoted the need for this ambitious review in order to place sustainability at the heart of the key sectors of refrigeration, air-conditioning and heating.

As a result, we are proud and satisfied to have contributed to improving a very crucial standard for the climate, the environment and our economy, since Italian and European companies are already at the forefront in developing clean alternatives to fluorinated gases.

This achievement also enables us to raise the bar on product innovation and quality while focusing on the next steps towards continuously optimising performance.

Criocabin Ongoing Innovation -

A renewed range to boost energy efficiency

We know that improving even a single product can have a significant impact on enhancing the business of a retail store. Hence, we decided to further renew our product range by focusing on energy efficiency, reducing consumption, and on sustainability. These issues are, and will increasingly be, on the agenda of every retailer in order to address everyday economic and environmental challenges and comply with the requirements laid down by international directives.

We have made important changes, which in certain configurations, guarantee energy savings of up to 30% compared to the previous model, along with a general improvement in performance. This outcome is due to more than 500 hours of tests we performed to identify the key factors in achieving increasingly high performance levels: a detailed analysis of thermodynamics for improved air circulation inside our furniture. As a result, we decided to use low-consumption fans, include plexiglass covers and night curtains as standard in certain models and, in some cases, also make structural changes, such as in the side panels of display counters and in glass front panels. We are constantly striving to improve our products. With the support of technology and data analysis, on a daily basis in our test rooms we are able to direct our project engineering towards increasingly ambitious goals.

Green heating, cooling and refrigeration: challenges and opportunities for Italy

What are the future prospects for Italy in the refrigeration and heating sector?

At the event ‘Riscaldare, Raffrescare e Refrigerare Green: le sfide e le opportunità per l’Italia’ (Green heating, cooling and refrigeration: challenges and opportunities for Italy), held on Monday 10 July at the Fondazione Fenice in Padua, we discussed the challenges and opportunities for Italy with the representatives of various companies active in these sectors. We contributed by examining the following topic: Energy Labelling in commercial refrigeration and potential future incentives, by Mario Penada – Technical Manager at Criocabin.

As a world-leading manufacturer of refrigeration and cooling technologies, this was an important debate for our country to help explore the opportunities and difficulties that lie ahead.

The event was promoted by EcoFuturo Festival, Legambiente Onlus and Unione del Caldo e del Freddo Green.
