Criocabin presenting MAX in Düsseldorf: the future of refrigeration

Criocabin is a ‘Made in Italy’ icon in the refrigerated display case sector. At Euroshop 2023, the company takes refrigeration for the Food & Retail sector to a new dimension. It is launching the MAX Family Line, revolutionising the very structure of the assisted-service display case, in contrast to how it has been conceived up to now. Versatility and Ergonomics are the key words: a raised display case, adjustable to two heights, brings the product closer to customers; maximum customisation of the decor panels and rear counter; maximum accessibility.

With a revolutionary concept, the outcome of over a year of Research and Development by a dedicated team, Criocabin is ready to drive the market in a new direction.

Criocare Academy: see you in 2023

The year 2022 has been an important one in terms of Customer Care. We have extended our service by creating Criocare, a business unit that offers much more than an after-sales service. We have developed an on-demand training project whereby we provide our stakeholders with theory and practical demonstrations of how to properly install our products in order to help them optimise their time and work. A real Academy with training on our premises to share the know-how that only a manufacturer can provide.

We and the participants were fully committed and achieved optimum results, as well as the satisfaction of providing a useful service that improves performance and energy efficiency and, above all, simplifies the work of our distributors and their technical staff.

Here are the courses held this year, on different dates:

Standard Display Counter Ducting Course – Intermediate

G Concept Installation and Operation Course – Intermediate

WOW and Nucleus Remote Control Course – Advanced

Criocare Academy will continue in 2023 and will be enhanced with new proposals to support our customers and partners. We thank everyone who took part in our courses this year and invite you to stay updated here on our website for all new dates.

See you in 2023!

Con UCFG per mettere la sostenibilità al centro nel settore della Refrigerazione commerciale in Italia e in Europa

With UCFG to put sustainability at the heart of the commercial Refrigeration sector in Italy and in Europe

Criocabin is a member of the Unione del Caldo e del Freddo Green (Coalition for Green Heating and Cooling), a working group coordinated by Legambiente, and represented by leading Italian companies in the refrigeration, air conditioning and heating sectors. Innovation, Ambition and Precaution are the watchwords guiding this national working group that aims to put sustainability at the centre of these key sectors for our territory and support an ambitious review of the new European F-Gas Regulation (EU 517/2014).

The goals of the UCFG are as follows:

  1. To promote the use of refrigeration, air conditioning, heating and heat pump technologies with low GWP natural gases (5), which are already technically developed, efficient and widely used today. In all applications (also for the maintenance of existing equipment by making leakage control mandatory) we support the use of natural gases, in which field Italy has a competitive edge;
  2. To define a national decarbonisation plan for refrigeration and heating, starting with the reconversion of the oldest and most impactful commercial refrigeration and heating systems, and subsequently in all other sectors of application;
  3. To extend the use of natural gases for refrigeration, air conditioning and heating also to the transport sector (ship, aeroplane and land), since equipment on means of transport (ships/boats, planes, buses, trucks/articulated trucks and trains) often contain quantities of fluorinated greenhouse gases exceeding 5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
  4. To step up tackling illegal trade in F-gases by improving monitoring, and with inspections of responsible authorities and their training with regard to the sustainability of the sector;
  5. The training of technicians and installers in the sector. To support the increasing demand for non-climate-changing refrigerant systems and in view of ambitious EU climate targets, an extraordinary effort in theoretical and practical training is urgently required to increasingly enable technicians to work with natural gases. The future of this strategic sector lies here, exploiting all the scientific and technological innovation that Italy has to offer with leading companies in this sector.

Criocabin is an ANIMA – Assocold associate, and as such we helped to draft the new international F-gas Regulation

One of the most important aspects of a properly functioning refrigerated counter is the choice of an appropriate non-polluting refrigerant fluid. To reduce the hole in the ozone layer, the Montreal Protocol banned FREON refrigerant fluids in 1990, introducing the use of HFC or HFE gases. Criocabin always produces refrigerated counters with careful attention to the environment and sustainability: this is why we market cutting-edge products with low (less than 5) GWP — Global Warming Potential refrigerant fluids.

Criocabin is an ANIMA – Assocold associate, and as such we helped to draft the new international F-gas Regulation to reduce the use of polluting gases by working tirelessly for the “Fit For 55” EU plan for a green transition.

With the European climate regulation as part of the European Green Deal, the EU set a binding goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. This will require a significant reduction from current levels of greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decades. As an intermediate step towards climate neutrality, the EU powered up its climate ambitions for 2030, making a commitment to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030. As part of the Fit for 55% package, the EU is working to revise the regulations on climate, energy and transport to align the current laws with the ambitions for 2030 and 2050.

Glycol System G-Concept

How G-Concept works, the specific refrigeration technology for meat

Meat displayed in a refrigerated counter in a butcher shop can undergo two types of alterations that economically harm users (in this case, the butcher shops):

• the oxidation of the surface of the goods (colour variation);

• a 2.96% loss of mass in 24 hours and a 5.56% loss in 48 hours.

The first problem is reflected in the need for the operator to remove the oxidised layer of meat (to make the goods more visually appetising), causing obvious economic harm. The second involves economic harm due to the Δmass of the displayed meat over 24 or 48 hours.

The technology used until 2015 to store meat was historically of two kinds: forced ventilation and static.

With our new G-Concept feature, Criocabin targeted a hybrid, semi-static system with a very slow, low energy consumption ventilation system. Unlike the systems used until now, the entire cooling system is supplied with glycol.

The high thermal exchange coefficient of the glycol refrigerant allowed us to work with a higher refrigeration temperature (with equal performance), resulting in a remarkable energy savings compared to a normal gas-cooled system.

The liquid is chilled using a water/gas exchanger located under the counter, an exclusive Criocabin design.

The innovative G-Concept helped us to meet our two main objectives:

1. the G-Concept system does not oxidise the meat;

2. the especially moderate ventilation and optimal humidity and temperature control makes the decrease in the mass of the meat less than 50% of what it is in a normal ventilated counter, with a remarkable financial savings for the butcher shop (1.35% after 24 hours and 2.75% after 48 hours).

Just consider that about 170 kg of meat can be displayed in a counter with an average length of 5 meters. From this, we can estimate a daily weight loss of 4.25 kg on a ventilated counter, versus about 1.7 kg in the G-Concept system.

The annual losses in a ventilated counter can be estimated as:

– 4.6 kg × 250 working days = 1,150 kg/year (in the best case).

The annual losses in a G-Concept system can be estimated as:

– 2.3 kg × 250 work days = 575 kg/year (in the worst case).

A butcher with a medium to small sized shop spends about 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening setting out and then removing the meat from the counter to move it to the cold room. With the G-Concept, the butcher no longer needs to perform these tasks: the meat can be left in the counter, replacing only the goods that are sold.

At night (and on days when the shop is closed) the only thing to be done is closing the night shields.

Thus, we can estimate a labour savings of about 3 hours/day:

3 hours/day × 250 work days = 750 hours/year
